Various artists - The 2011 Grammy Nominees

Various artists - Grammy Nominees 2011Next month’s Grammy Awards promises to be a showdown between rappers Eminem and Jay Z and singer Bruno Mars. Eminem leads with 10 nominations, while Mars and Jay Z received seven and six nods respectively. All three are competing in the top category, Record of the Year, along with Cee Lo Green, whose notoriously catchy, X-rated single “F*** You” (aka “Forget You”) is also up for Song of the Year.

While the men may have come out on top, pop’s ladies will be well represented at the 53rd annual edition of the awards, taking place Feb. 11. Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Rihanna are strong contenders in all the major categories, including Album of the Year. Gaga, pop’s most flamboyant personality, is no stranger to the event. Last year, she won two trophies and stole the televised night with her flamboyant piano-vocal duet with Sir Elton John. This year, the “Poker Face” singer is back for another show-stopping performance.

The Grammys are must-see TV, second only to the Oscars in audience size. The best primer for this year’s event is The 2011 Grammy Nominees. A 19-track CD, featuring 19 diverse selections, it includes Katy Perry’s beach anthem “California Gurls” and Gaga’s monster hit “Telephone,” featuring Beyoncé. Even Eminem and John Mayer get assists from the ladies, with Taylor Swift joining Mayer on “Half of My Heart” and Rihanna lending her falsetto-drenched croon to Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie.” This year’s Grammys could turn out to be ladies’ night after all.
